American Revolution
Around the middle of the 18th century, Presbyterians escaped persecution in Europe and settled in America. There were so many Presbyterians in America around the time of the American Revolution, that the British called the American Revolution "The Presbyterian Revolt" It is thought that 14 or so of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Presbyterians, including clergyman John Witherspoon.

Presbyterianism in the United States of America
The first presbytery is American was organized and established in Philadelphia in 1706. During the 1800s, disagreement over slvery and evangelism broke the church into northern and southern branches. The two branches reunited in 1983 to form the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Since that time, there have been several splinters off the PCUSA, but the focus has remained on one goal: Being Christ's servants and living life as he taught.
